Ściany, bruk i budynki pulsują, drzewa i krzewy rezonują, przenosząc wibracje powstające w małych organizmach cykad.
To, o czym śni „ludzka kultura”.
Summer Repetitions
August in Athens, the sun seems to have halted at a perpetual zenith, the heat is so intense it makes the air shimmer with fantastic apparitions, Mediterranean mirages. All is full of music. Embedded in space, ever so present, it has been there for so long that hardly any local notices it anymore. That this archaic spectacle of sound should go unheeded puzzles the traveler from the North. Walls, cobblestones and buildings pulsate, trees and shrubs resonate, brought to life by the vibrating call of cicadas.
Spotting them is hard. Nearly grown together with tree trunks and branches, they are more like a presence. There is no way you can escape the sounds they make, no way you can shut them out. Pieces composed by the cicadas harmonize with the circle of time, follow the logic of nature. In the evening, people strolling at the foot of the Parthenon become part of this symphony. Along with the din of the café, the noise of the street, the rhythm of the city. Sounds keep on thickening till the line between imagination and reality blurs.
The cicadas have seen times of prosperity and downfall, survived hardship and military onslaught. They are outside all systems, impervious to economic or political pressure. The turbulent history of the Acropolis tells of struggles for supremacy. Buildings changed hands, becoming a symbolic arena of power play. Great nations fell, spectacular victories were won. Marble pillars turned to dust. And all the while, the cicadas rehearsed their elaborate rhythms. Recurrence, return, repetition. Continuity. The stuff “human culture” dreams of.
Athens breaks into waves, it sparkles, it glitters. Sounds flow down the streets, filling the tiniest crack, bouncing off the walls. Spilling out like lava. Every tree sprouts an infinity of rhythms, enacting an invisible rite of mysteries over the whole city. The cicadas have a voice.
Recordings carried out with binaural microphones at the foot of the Acropolis, in the vicinity of Dionysiou Areopagitou (Οδός Διονυσίου Αρεοπαγίτου) and in the National Garden (Εθνικός Κήπος).
